Though Barbie is 60 years old, she continues to remain a fashion icon. Her stylishness ranges from beach and day wear to evening elegance. This Halloween, discard the stereotypical Barbie pink, and flashback to 1962 when Barbie wore powdery blues and soft velvets. Recall her art mod style with psychedelic patterns and go-go boots. Single out one of her hottest fads from the 1950s to present, and dress like Barbie for Halloween.
Instructions
Vintage 1962
1. Dress in a pair of powder blue velvet cigar or skinny pants. Alternately, find a pair of powder blue sweats without elasticized bottoms.
2. Locate a blue knit cardigan sweater, and remove the buttons. Shrink it down a size. Sleeves should be three quarter length, and the body snug. Sew a wide, white knit scarf around the neckline to create a full collar.
3. Slip into a white halter top to wear underneath the cardigan--one that slips over the head and barely reaches the waist. Accessorize the outfit with a triple strand pearl choker.
4. Pull on a pair of gold cork wedgies, and paint toenails to match lip color.
5. Curl and tease hair until it produces a curly, round shape around the head to resemble the 1962 Barbie hairstyle called, "bouffant bubble-cut." Then part on the side. For a substitute, don a chestnut brown "bubble-cut" wig.
6. Put on foundation for flawless skin. Apply powder blue eye shadow to the eye lids with black liquid liner edging the upper lid. Then add thick black mascara, and curl eyelashes. Add coral or red lipstick and medium-sized pearl stud earrings to complete the costume.
Trendy Mod
7. Acquire a long-sleeved one-piece jumpsuit, preferably black or white. Use an opposite-colored fabric paint pen to make thin contrasting lines or abstract line designs on the entire costume, and allow to dry.
8. Cut the pant length to make short shorts, and hem. Stitch white satin trim onto the arm and leg cuffs and at the neck to create a mandarin styled collar.
9. Augment the jumpsuit with a rocker-inspired white belt to hang low on the hips. Affix self-adhesive rivets or jewels to its entire length.
10. Pull on hot pink or fuchsia tights, and find a short pair of white ankle go-go boots. Draw a thick line from the top center of the boot straight down to the middle point of the toe with a marker. Draw a thick band around the top edge of the boot with a marker and another one at the ankle. Let dry.
11. Straighten long blonde hair with bangs, or obtain a long-haired blonde wig with long bangs to wear. Apply black mascara, and accentuate lips with a pastel pink lipstick. To finish the costume, wear a pair of white sunglasses with pink-tinted lenses.
