Crafts add entertainment and fun to a Hawaiian luau party.
A Hawaiian luau party creates lots of tropical fun for both adults and kids. A Hawaiian party is a great way to celebrate summer or to fend off the winter blues. No matter when you throw the party, choosing party crafts that fit the Hawaiian theme keeps the guests entertained. Keep in mind the age of the party guests when choosing appropriate Hawaiian party crafts.
Leis
Leis are a must at any Hawaiian party. Instead of buying the inexpensive plastic leis at a party store, have guests make their own. Each child needs a long string as the base of the lei. Cut straws into one inch lengths. Look for colorful straws instead of the plain white straws. Cut out flower shapes from card stock or construction paper or use flower-shaped craft foam. Punch a hole in the middle of each flower. The kids thread the straws and flowers onto the string alternating back and forth. Tie the ends together and they each have a custom lei.
Sand Art
Sand is another staple in Hawaii. Use sand as the base of creative party crafts for older children. Craft stores sell sand in different colors, or you can color plain sand by mixing in powdered tempera paint. The colored sand works well for bottle sand art. Use funnels to layer the different colors inside small bottles. Alternatively, draw pictures with the sand. Draw a shape on paper with glue. Sprinkle the sand on top of the glue so it sticks. Shake off the excess sand. Do only one color at a time so the sand colors don't mix together.
Grass Skirts
Let the kids make their own grass skirts. A length of elastic creates the waistband. Staple or sew the ends of the elastic together. You can also use a length of ribbon and tie it around the child's waist. Cut long pieces of green crepe paper streamers. Glue or tape the streamers to the elastic or ribbon to create the skirt.
An similar plan involves adding embellishments to grass skirts purchased at a party supply store. The kids glue flowers around the waist bands of the skirts to add a tropical touch to the grass skirts.
Seashell Frames
This craft gives the guests a keepsake from the party. Use cardboard picture frames or cheap wooden frames. Let the kids paint the frames. Help them hot glue seashells around the frame. You can purchase seashells at craft stores in a variety of sizes and shapes. Another option is to cover the picture frame in a thin layer of glue. Sprinkle sand over the glue before attaching the seashells.
