Honeydew Melon Information

Honeydews are part of the muskmelon family. They are considered to be the sweetest melons. There is also a derivative of the honeydew, the winter melon, which is not sweet at all and is eaten as a vegetable. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Appearance

Honeydews are creamy yellow or green melons that are round to oval shaped with stringy seed membranes. At ripeness, a single melon will weigh 4 to 8 pounds.

Seasonality

Honeydews are grown worldwide all year, but in the Americas, the melons are harvested between August and October.

Origins

Honeydews originated in the south of France and Algeria. The fruit are now cultivated worldwide.

Uses

Honeydews have sweet ripened flesh and are best eaten raw and fresh. Though often consumed plain, common applications are as dessert, in fruit salad and with yogurt.

Selection

A good ripened honeydew will weigh about 5 pounds, give slightly to the touch and have an blemished waxy pastel yellow skin.
