The Big Island surf, Hawaii
Naalehu, the southernmost city on Hawaii's Big Island, is surrounded by lush green landscapes, dramatic coastal scenery and rugged mountain terrain. Convenient for tourist attractions such as the Kau Forest Reserve, Manuka State Park and Volcano National Park, it is 55 miles from the Kona International at Keahole airport.
Kalaekilohana
Kalaekilohana is a plantation-era style bed and breakfast with hotel standard facilities. The luxurious suites come equipped with private bathrooms and balconies, walk-in rain showers, cotton bed sheets and local hardwood furnishings. Located one mile off Highway 11 on South Point Road, Kalaekilohana is equidistant from the Pu`uhonua `O Honaunau National Historic Park and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Take a dip in the ocean at nearby Papakolea Green Sand Beach at Mahana Bay, or watch the sun set at Ka Lae, the southernmost point on the island. Breakfast is a feast of local produce, from Hawaiian coffee to locally sourced fruits and vegetables.
Shirakawa Motel
This is a basic and inexpensive motel hidden among sprawling gardens near South Point, the most southerly point on the island. The 13 rooms have private bathrooms with showers, double beds and clean towels (kitchenette units available on request). As of January 2011, rooms start from $43 per night. One of the few motels for miles around, in peak season it is advisable to book ahead.
Bourganvillea Bed and Breakfast
Located in Ocean View 10 miles west of Naalehu, the Bourgainvillea is a family-owned bed and breakfast convenient to the south coast beaches, Volcanoes National Park and leisure activities including hiking, scuba, snorkeling and kayaking. Breakfast is served on the balcony between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. every morning, and amenities include a swimming pool, hot tub and barbecue area. The Bourganvillea boasts it own pineapple patch, which visitors can pick from when the fruit is ripe.
Vacation International: Sea Mountain
Situated 15 miles northwest of Naalehu, this resort is part of a golf course. Amenities and services include an outdoor pool, hot tub, wireless Internet, snack bar and tennis courts. A range of studio, one- and two-bedroom units come equipped with full kitchen, washer/dryer, television and DVD player, telephone, ceiling fans and a patio or balcony. Located on the coast, the beach is a five-minute walk away. Pets are not allowed, and smoking is restricted to designated areas.
