Homemade Hawaiian Decorations

Hawaiian theme decor creates a beautiful, relaxing room that makes your home feel like your own little tropical getaway. You don't have to spend a lot of money for this look. You just need some earthy-colored walls and a few craft supplies. There are a lot of easy, do-it-yourself projects you can use to bring the look and feel of the islands into your room.

Raffia Skirt

Use this great raffia skirt-style decoration as a table or bed skirt, or to hang as curtains.

Measure the length you'll need the skirting to be. If it is to be used as a bed skirt, measure from the top of the box spring to the floor. If it's to be used to skirt an end table, measure from the table top to the floor. For curtains, measure the length of your window.

Get a piece of elastic long enough to go around your box spring or table. For curtains, use a thin curtain rod.

Get a lot of raffia. How much you will need depends on your project. Raffia comes in a variety of festive colors these days for a bold look, or use natural raffia for a soft and earthy look.

Lay a batch of raffia on the table. Measure and cut it to the length you need, plus 2 to 3 inches for folding over.

Lay the curtain rod or elastic over the top of the raffia. Fold about 2 to 3 inches over the rod or elastic. Hot glue it into place.

Continue working in batches until your curtain rod or elastic is as full as you desire.

Stitch the elastic ends together when you have finished getting all the raffia onto it.

Hang your skirt around your box spring or table frame, or hang your curtain rods.

Banana Leaf Fabric Print

Make banana leaf print fabric to use as a sofa throw, curtain or bed spread.

Lay your fabric on a table. If your fabric is very large you might need to work in sections.

Purchase some green fabric paints, a craft paintbrush, and a brayer. If you don't have a brayer, you can use a rolling pin. Also get a few banana leaves. You can use faux leaves, but real leaves will give you the beautiful veins for realistic designs.

Paint the underside of the banana leaf with fabric paint. Use very little paint for a dry brush effect so you will create a light imprint with the veins and stem showing.

Place the leaf on the fabric, being careful not to wiggle it so that it won't smear. Cover the leaf with a piece of paper towel.

Roll the brayer or rolling pin over the paper towel, being careful not to let the leaf move underneath.

Pull up the paper towel and the leaf. Paint the leaf again and repeat the process to cover your fabric in leaves.

Wall Art

Bring the tropical beach into your home by creating shadow box wall art.

Get some shadowbox wall frames.

Fill them with some sand, sea shells, sand dollars, starfish, sea glass or any other beach treasures. You can find these in your travels, or purchase them from tourist shops or craft stores.

Hang them on the wall for a beautiful decoration.
