How Transfer Titles After The Death Of A Parent

Transferring the title to a car after a parent's death requires a bit of legwork, but nothing too complicated.

When a parent dies, the family will have to take legal steps to transfer property titles to the surviving spouse and/or children. Even if the decedent leaves a last will and testament passing an automobile to a surviving child, the court simply probates the vehicle. The title will still have to transfered from the parent's name to his son or daughter.

Instructions

1. Go to the nearest Department of Motor Vehicles. Present your government photo identification and the court's probate documents.

2. Present the title. Give the DMV official the vehicle's title and ask for a transfer of ownership form. Complete the form in its entirety and return it to the DMV official.

3. Verify the VIN number. Have the DMV official accompany you to the automobile to match the Vehicle Identification Number or VIN to the corresponding number on the title to verify the title belongs to the car.

4. Pay the title transfer fee. With the completed transfer of ownership form and vehicle inspection, pay the title transfer fee, generally about $50 or less.
