Hula skirts are a craft that can be made with basic supplies from a craft store. If you are having a luau party or want a craft for children to do, hula skirts are a project that everyone will enjoy. Techniques for making the skirts are available for all age groups, from children to adults.
Tied Hula Skirt
Purchase elastic band in ½-inch or ¾-inch widths at a sewing or craft store and tan or green raffia in natural or synthetic style. Cut the elastic the length around the waist or slightly smaller for a tighter fit. Sew the elastic together to make a loop for the waist. Measure the length from the waist to knee, and cut strips of raffia double this length. Fold the raffia over the elastic band and tie. Keep adding raffia to the elastic band until it is as full as desired. Children can create their own skirt by using crepe paper and tying strips onto the elastic band in the same manner as tying the raffia.
Table Fringe Hula Skirt
You can buy table fringe at a party supply store to make a hula skirt. Purchase wide cording or a canvas strap for the waist band. The length needs to be 12 to 15 inches longer than the waist measurement, so it can be tied. Cut the table fringe to the length of the waist measurement. Glue the table fringe to the cording, making sure it is centered so the excess cording is even on both ends for tying. Tie the skirt around the waist and trim to the desired length.
Paper Hula Skirt Craft
A child can make a hula skirt with brown wrapping paper, glue and lengths of raffia to tie around the waist. Cut two lengths of brown paper approximately 2 inches longer than the child's waist. Lay each piece of paper on top of each other vertically and staple across the top. Cut hula strips starting from the bottom to approximately 3 inches from the top. Glue or tape the raffia cord inside the skirt and tie around the child's waist. Old newspapers will also work and you can paint them if desired.
