Homemade Volcano For Science Project

There are many ways to make your own volcano for a science project.

For a volcano science project, you can make your own unique and creative erupting volcano to enhance your display and make your project come to life. With some everyday items and a little bit of artistry, you can construct a volcano that will erupt on command. Depending on the nature of your project or display, you can build a volcano of any size, shape and color; it's all up to you to decide how you want to build it.

Instructions

1. Construct the tube of the volcano to hold the ingredients for lava and to house the eruption. Cut the top off a plastic water bottle to form the central part of the volcano. Attach the bottle to the sturdy cardboard base with glue or tape.

2. Build the body of the volcano with paper mache, clay or other materials to give your volcano a unique look and appearance. For paper mache, bunch up newspapers and tape them to the bottle. Make paper mache mix out of water and flour or water and school glue and use it to adhere strips of newspaper around the bottle to form the body of the volcano.

3. Decorate the body and platform of the volcano with markers, paints or other art supplies. Make the volcano look as realistic or fantastical as you want, as long as you don't obstruct the top of the volcano tube.

4. Make the volcano erupt by combining baking soda, vinegar, food coloring and a touch of dish soap in the volcano tube. The ingredients that create the eruption are vinegar and baking soda, so wait to add the vinegar until you're ready for the eruption. Experiment with different mixtures in a separate container until you come up with a mixture you're happy with.
