Learn adjust the sight on your Smith and Wesson M&P.
The Smith and Wesson M&P handgun was first introduced to the gun market in 2005, and is constructed with the needs of law enforcement personnel in mind. The M&P stands for Military and Police, and the key features that make the weapon attractive to law enforcement individuals are the intricate safety features of the gun. The M&P has a separate locking mechanism that prevents the weapon from being fired without a special key. The sight-work of this handgun is adjustable on the rear sight only, and only for left-right windage adjustment. Adjusting the rear sight requires a plastic drift or a brass punch to avoid scratching the weapon's finish.
Instructions
1. Remove the magazine, and cock the slide back to visually inspect the chamber. Ensure that no ammunition is present in the weapon.
2. Place the weapon in a padded gun vise pointing away from you, as you would normally hold it in your hand to aim.
3. Loosen the set screw in the center of the rear sight by turning it counter-clockwise with a plastic-tipped screwdriver. Some M&P models do not have a set screw.
4. Place the plastic or brass drift on the rear sight left or right side, and lightly tap into the desired position with a plastic hammer. If your shot needs to be moved to the right on the target, move the sight to the right. Move the sight to the left for shots that need to move left on the target.
5. Tighten down the set screw (if applicable) after your adjustments have been made.
