Decorate A Fish Shaped Cake

Hosts looking to lure guests in for a swimmingly good time can make a fun fish shaped cake. While there are a variety of ways to make a fish shaped cake, one easy way is to simply make a round 1-layer cake, then decorate it like a fish. Whether its for a summer birthday, a luau, a pool party, or any summer-time event, a fish shaped cake is sure to impress all who attend. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Tint some icing to give it a fish-friendly color. While many colors will look great, a light green created from mixing green and yellow icing colors gives the cake a bright summery appearance.

2. Spread the icing on the cake. Begin by using a knife to cover the cake.

3. Create the illusion of scales. Run a spatula vertically down the top of the cake in swervy lines to create wave-like strips across the fish. Use the same motion to ice the sides of the cake, too.

4. Give the fish an eye. Stick a marshmallow on a top corner of the cake, then top it off by attaching a dark brown M&M with some icing.

5. Add some fish lips. Use red icing or decorative gel to draw on a smile, or stick two red candies to the side of the cake to make puckered fish lips.

6. Create a fin out of gummy candies, such as candy fruit slices. Simply stick a row of the candies to the top of the fish, as well as the fish's behind to create a tail. For the flipper, place two of the candies in about the middle of the cake.

7. Decorate the fish with candy. Use candies of your choice to create patterns on the fish. If you are not content with the appearance of your icing scales, make candy scales by layering candy on the fish's body. Add a toss of sprinkles for a final decorative touch.
