Fancy Up A Plain Bridal Invitation

Make beautiful invitations with a few simple touches.

Buying a boxed set of invitations at your local supermarket or craft store is a great way to save money on your invitations. These boxed packages are usually $100 cheaper than buying invitations from a catalog or online dealer. However, many of these invitations are simple or plain. They usually have a simple black font and room for one or two pages of basic information. However, with a few supplies that you probably have on hand, you can spruce these invitations up and make them beautiful and unique.

Instructions

1. Punch two holes on the top of your invitation. Thread ribbon in your wedding color through the holes and make a bow tie. Tie raffia in the holes instead for an earthier feel.

2. Thread thick string in your preferred color through a needle. Tie the ends together. Make a stitch pattern in the form of an "x" by inserting the needle on the bottom corner of the invitation, sewing diagonal on top of the invitation, threading the needle in a straight line down, and sewing diagonal again so that the two ends symmetrically line up together. Continue stitching around the perimeter of the invitation until you have a series of x's all the way around your invitaition.

3. Use stamps around the edge of your invitation. Choose from a selection you have on hand, pick up a stamp that matches your theme, or go to a local stationery store to have a monogram made for you. Stamp around the four corners of your invitation.

4. Add a border around your invitation. Use a store bought border or make your own with shaped scissors. Add a silk flower or leaf in the middle of the border for a soft touch.

5. Add pressed flowers for a unique look. Press your flowers in a book days or weeks before you want to start using them. Paste the flowers in small bunches on the invitation and adhere with thin craft glue.

6. Use vellum paper. This translucent paper can really set the stage for your invitation and give it a dramatic elegance. Make a picture of a wedding cake, rings or a bride and groom and attach the vellum paper on top of your existing invitation. Use special words like "faith," "commitment" and "love" for another look. Place printable vellum paper in your printer and print your picture on the paper. Adhere or tie the vellum page to your invitation.

7. Add a unique enclosure. Spell out your name, destination location or personal mantra with letters that separate pages. Glue a themed enclosure to your invitation such as a seashell or starfish for your beach wedding.

8. Add embellishments to your invitation. Scour the scrapbooking area and pick up decorative pieces that have adhesive backings. These can include appliques, die cuts or paper piecings. Choose items that correspond with your theme such as butterflies, doves, hearts or crosses for a religious ceremony.

9. Use a stencil on your invitation. Tape the stencil in the desired location on your invitation. Paint, use colored pencils or pastels and fill in the holes on the stencil. Gently remove the tape and move it to the next location. Continue until you have the desired look.

10. Add jewelry. Punch holes at the top of your invitation and string faux pearl beads through them. Search local flea markets for old pieces of costume jewelry and add these for your enclosures or to make your invitation more interesting. Adhere a cross to your invitation.

11. Experiment with different shapes for a unique presentation. Cut your invitation in the shape of a heart for a romantic feel. Roll your invitation into a scroll by starting your rolling from the bottom of the invitation all the way to the top. Tie decorative ribbon around the middle of the invitation. Send in a postal tube to your recipients.
