Dress For A Hawaiian Luau

Luaus are traditional Hawaiian feasts. Musicians and dancers entertain the guests. Guest typically dine on slow-roasted kalua pig (Hawaiian pulled pork), lomi salmon and other Hawaiian delicacies. Traditionally, luaus were communal festivals used for special occasions such as celebrating a marriage or the completion and launching of a canoe. Over time, however, the concept of luau has been extended to include other kinds of parties including birthdays and graduations. Because they feature festive, brightly colored costumes and a relaxed, island atmosphere, luaus have become a theme for summer backyard and beach parties everywhere.

Instructions

1. Think floral. Flower print shirts for men and dresses for women make great costumes for a Hawaiian luau party. Floral print shirts can be worn buttoned up or open over a plain t-shirt. Men and women can also wear floral print shorts to complete the theme, although any shorts should look alright.

2. Add more flowers. Natural or artificial Hawaiian leis are one of the most recognizable parts of a Hawaiian luau costume. Both men and women can also wear flowers in their hair or in the button holes of their shirts, or pinned to their clothing.

3. Consider grass skirts. Both men and women wear grass skirts in traditional Hawaiian dances. For women, these can be matched with bikini tops, shell or coconut bras.

4. Keep your head covered. Straw hats are great for any outdoor summer party, Hawaiian luaus included. Festive women's hats with ornamental flowers sewn on also look great.

5. Wear beach jewelery. Shell or shark's tooth necklaces, brightly colored beads and anything with a light, festive look will compliment your Hawaiian luau costume.

6. Wear flip flops or sandals. They are comfortable, great for the beach and have that laid-back summer look that luaus are all about.
