Enjoy The Big Island Of Hawaii

One of Hawaii's many slices of lush paradise

The Big Island of Hawaii is a diverse delight, mixing the expected tropical wonders with arid forests and even winter snow on Mauna Kea. Visitors will embrace the warm hospitality, stupendous beaches and mouth-watering Polynesian cuisine.

Instructions

1. Consider arranging your lodgings on the Kona Coast, on the island's west side, with some amazing beaches and stunning sunsets. The Royal Kona Resort, nestled on 12 lush acres, is one great choice. Kona Village Resort, with its tiki-style cottages is nice too.

2. Amongst the beach and ocean fun you can partake in, one of the best options is snorkeling at Kahalua Beach Park. Swimming with sea turtles, trumpet fish and other friendly marine life here is unforgettable.

3. Enjoy a day in Hilo on the island's eastern shores, where the diversions include botanical gardens, museums and galleries, and even a rainforest zoo. The Lyman House Museum is a charming way to appreciate the state's history, and the best of the many gardens is probably Nani Mau, with 20 acres and more than 225 kinds of flowering plants.

4. While there is a plethora of great dining spots on Hawaii, you can't go wrong with a visit to Merriman's, on Highway 19 in Waimea. From sumptuous seafood platters to kalua pig quesadillas, you'll enjoy fresh, local ingredients cooked to perfection.

5. An offbeat stroll can be taken at Banyan Drive, along Waiakea Peninsula near the Airport, where Banyan trees have been planted since 1933. Those that have planted trees in their own honor include: Cecil B. DeMille, Babe Ruth, Amelia Earhart and Richard Nixon.

6. A wonderful way to see much of the island is through an extensive tour, with many groups offering a diversity of choices. Eco-friendly outdoor frolics are offered by Hawaii Forest & Trail, with seven options ranging from an excursion into private forests to a journey through Volcanoes National Park.

7. A great evening experience can be had at a beach luau (offered by many resorts), hopping the bars on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona, or a special "Evening at Kahua Ranch." A bit like a "cowboy luau," the special dinner takes place at a working cattle ranch and includes amazing barbecued treats, live guitar music and dancing, storytelling, stargazing and more-all from the hillsides of the Kohala Mountains.
