Leis aren't just for girls; guys can wear them, too. If you're having a Hawaiian-themed party, you may consider getting or making leis for all your guests to wear. Instead of doing the traditional lei for everyone, you can make special leis for guys that are different than those for the girls. Making a Hawaiian lei for boys is just as easy as making one for girls. It just requires different colored flowers. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. With a ruler measure out 40 inches of dental floss and cut it off at this measurement. Take a 10-inch long needle and thread the floss through the eye. Tie it in a double knot. Cut off the excess floss from the knot to make the threading process later easier.
2. Choose your flowers. Select green and blue flowers that are sturdy and have a strong center. Some great choices include green orchids, red tulip anthuriums and the blue iris. Cut the blooms off right below the bud so you completely remove the stem. Depending on the size of the flower, you will need at least 60 flowers. Leis for boys tend to use larger flowers but the choice of flowers is entirely up to you.
3. Take a threaded needle and poke it through the center of the bloom. Carefully push the flower down the line all the way to the end, leaving 2 inches of free line. You also have the option of adding in kukui nuts in between flowers to make it more masculine. For the kukui nuts, you will need to poke a hole through the nut's center with the needle. If you find it too difficult, then you can use a small drill and drill a hole through the center. Then, poke the needle and floss through and thread the nut like the flowers.
4. Continue to poke the needle through the center of each flower or nut and push it down the line. Do this until the entire line is filled with flowers, leaving 2 inches of free line on either side.
5. Tie the two ends in a triple knot. Cut off the excess line. Cover the lei in damp paper towels and store in a refrigerator until you are ready to use it or give it to the man who will wear it.
