Build A Deep Pit Barbeque

Outdoor cooking is a refreshing way to prepare a meal on a nice day. It gets any chef out of a steamy kitchen and into the fresh air. Creating an outdoor deep pit barbecue can be an exciting way to cook up a big meal for any party or gathering. With a little work and a couple hours of time, you can grill up a delicious meal under the sun or moon. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a good location for your grill, away from anything combustible or flammable. The grill should also be somewhat near your kitchen so you can easily transport supplies.

2. Select a grill rack the size you plan to make your grill. Using the rack from an old gas grill is a good option. The rack should also be able to handle the weight of whatever you plan to cook.

3. Dig a hole for your pit. Make the hole slightly smaller than the grill rack that you have chosen. The sides of the hole need to support the rack. The depth of the hole should be approximately 1 1/2 to 3 feet deep. The hole size determines the size of the food that you are able to cook. It also determines the size of the fire. A fire that is too far or too close to the grill rack could lead to over- or under-cooking a meal.

4. Place firebricks or large rocks in the the pit. These hold and distribute the heat of the fire.

5. Place kindling amongst the fire bricks or large rocks. This material can include anything that is combustible and safe to burn around food. Dry leaves, twigs and logs make excellent kindling.

6. Fill 1/3 of the hole with firewood.

7. Light a fire in the pit and allow the fire to burn down the firewood. This can take several hours. As the wood burns down, replace it with new wood. Do this until you are satisfied with the amount of wood coals in the pit. Once you have the desired layer of coals, your grill is ready for cooking.
