A homemade present can be just as good as one you've paid for.
Birthdays, Christmas and anniversaries can all be hugely stressful times when money is tight and you need to buy presents. That horrible feeling that you're not going to be able to afford what you think people deserve can be hugely depressing. But it's true what they say, a homemade gift can say a lot more about what you feel for the recipient than the most expensive item you can afford from a department store. If the gift is for your husband, you can enjoy using the process to find new ways to convey your feelings towards him.
Knit a Sweater
Once you've got the hang of it, knitting really isn't too difficult. For a few dollars you can buy a set of knitting needles and as much wool as you'll need. If you're really up against it financially, just knit him a scarf. You can even get knitting patterns for free online. This gift will be a particular surprise if he knows you've never knitted before and you've managed to keep the process a secret until handing over the finished article.
Decorate a Photo Frame
Buy a cheap wooden photo frame from a craft or a thrift store. If you have one around the house that you don't use, all the better. Paint a design onto the frame using acrylic paint. You can also glue plastic jewelry around the edge. Once you've finished your design, select a photo of you as a couple that you know is special to him, write a romantic message on the back of it and put it in the photo frame. Give him the picture without mentioning the message. If one day if the frame breaks, he will be able to read the message before repairing it.
A Portrait
If you have a friend who can paint, ask her if she could paint a portrait of you as a gift for your husband. If you don't, you could approach a local art school and ask if you could model for its students in return for a picture. You could even, if feeling particularly adventurous, consider posing as a nude model and present your husband with the resultant portrait.
A Fantasy Weekend
Arrange a weekend full of events and activities that you know your husband will love. This doesn't have to involve huge expense and can be as simple as arranging for the kids to stay with relatives, cooking a selection of his favorite meals and allowing him to watch sports, listen to music or go for a drive depending on what he enjoys. Make sure any tawdry tasks that he would usually have to do are taken care of and put particular effort into arranging a romantic evening. You could even consider a little dressing-up or role playing as an extra special treat.
