Homemade Hawaiian Luau Costumes
The key to a successful Hawaiian Luau costume is to use a variety of flowers, bright colors and to keep in beach or tropical attire. Many items used in constructing the costume can be found in your own home, or with a few inexpensive purchases. Keep in mind that if wearing a flower in your hair or behind your ear the left side indicates married and the right side single, in the Hawaiian culture. Does this Spark an idea?
Creating a Hawaiian Costume
A staple of a Luau costume is the classic grass skirt. This can be purchased at a costume or party store or made after a trip to the grocery store. To make your own grass skirt, cut strips in brown paper bags, leaving space at the top so the strips won't tear away. Attach more than one bag together around the waist if necessary. For a splash of color, attach some silk, paper or real flowers to the skirt by gluing them to the bag. Wear a brightly colored tank top or shirt with the skirt. For the more daring and risque, pair the grass skirt with a bikini top.
For men, the colorful and bright flower print shirt is a critical part of the costume. If you don't already own one, take an old, brightly colored button-up shirt that you no longer wear and add some luau accents. Using fabric paint, paint tropical flowers all over the shirt. Wear the luau shirt with khakis, or the grass skirt discussed above.
Accessories
Both men and women should wear sandals or flip flops with their respective costumes. For an added touch, hot glue a silk or plastic flower to the top of the sandals.
A lei, or a flowered string necklace, is another staple of the luau costume. Using a sturdy string, piece of yarn, or thin rope, glue some tropical flowers around the necklace. Tie or loop around your neck. Create smaller versions of the necklace to wear around your wrists and ankles.
If desired, glue a flower to a bobby pin or headband to wear in the hair. Use makeup and body paint to draw some colorful or tribal tattoos on the chest, arms and legs.
