Use homemade decorations for your next luau.

A traditional Hawaiian luau is a feast that celebrates an important event, such as a birthday, anniversary or engagement. A luau is a way to bring family and friends together to have fun. Planning your next luau does not require spending lots of money on decorations. It's all about bright colors, tropical fruit and flowers. Party planners can choose from a number of ideas for homemade luau decorations. Does this Spark an idea?

Table Decorations

Overlay bright colored table runners on top of plain white table cloths. Look for long raffia or grass skirts at your local craft or party store to place around the table as a hula skirt.

To bring more of the island theme to the table, scatter small sea shells mixed with bright colored confetti around the table. Place some loose purple orchids, hibiscus and gardenias (or the flower of your choice) around the table. Combine real and fake flowers to cut costs. Place tropical fruit--like bananas, coconuts and mangoes--in a basket or clear bowl for a center piece.

Cut out large green leaves from construction paper to resemble palm fronds and place underneath plates and serving bowls.

Lighting

Cut the tops off pineapples and insert long candles in the center to create fun candle holders for the table.

String multicolored Christmas lights around the deck, fence or trees to add color.

Fill large clear bowls with water tinted with blue food coloring. Place some floating votives in the water.

Purchase inexpensive tiki torches from your nearby grocery or retail store or borrow them from friends and neighbors and place them around the yard and entrance ways. You can also create tiki torches using small, cylinder baskets or containers from around the house. Simply insert yellow, orange and red tissue paper for the flame.

Outdoors

Create a fun tropical oasis in your backyard. Open beach umbrellas and setup colorful beach chairs. Decorate with your child's surfboard or boogie board by leaning them against a fence or tree. Pull out the kiddie pool. Fill it with water and place floating candles and flowers inside.

Serveware

Mix and match bright, solid color plates and napkins. Add a flower tied as napkin rings. Hollow out pineapples and use them for a serving bowls for salsa or other condiments.
