Homemade Kid Mermaid Costume

Homemade Kid Mermaid Costume

After watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid," who wouldn't want to grow a pair of fins and swim around the ocean all day? Unfortunately, however, most adults would find the task of dressing like a mermaid nearly impossible to do on a day-to-day basis. But luckily for kids, dressing up as a mermaid does not breed any hostility among friends, and they can make believe all they want. So go ahead and make your child's dream come true by giving her a fun homemade mermaid costume.

Lower Body

To create the mermaid's lower body, look for a stretchy, long green or light blue skirt that travels from the hips to the little girl's shins. It is preferable that the skirt be somewhat tight. Measure the length from where the skirt ends to the child's ankles to make the mermaid's fins. Use a lacy or silky material that can produce volume and covers the rest of the girl's legs. The color of the material should be a different shade of the same color you used in the skirt. Sew the fin material to the bottom of the skirt, making sure to turn the skirt inside out before you start.

Upper Body

Find a tank top or bikini top and have the child wear it with the skirt. If using a tank top or other shirt, you can find large, real or fake sea shells that can cover her chest area. All you have to do is glue them to the shirt using a hot glue gun. Just make sure that the shirt underneath is close to the girl's skin color.

Extra Touches

To finish the look, you can create bracelets and necklaces out of sea shells either found on a beach or in a craft store. You can glue these shells to some thick yarn, preferably wrapped a few times over. Sprinkle some glitter on the girl's skirt to create a complete magical mermaid look, and glue some blue or green sequins to create the illusion of scales (see Ref 1). Some face and body glitter will also add an enchanting touch to the costume.
