Many freshwater clam varieties are edible, but rarely do any of them taste "good." This is because clams are filter feeders, sitting on lake floors where they suck up the muck and any pollutants that may be in the water. If knowing this doesn't deter you from wanting to eat clams from a freshwater, standing lake then you should have no problem preparing them to improve their tastes. Instructions
1. Drop the cleaned, shelled clam meat into the mixing bowl. Make sure it's thoroughly rinsed so to avoid granular pieces of dirt or other debris.
2. Pour the pint of milk into the bowl. Add the salt and mix the clam meat around in the solution for a minute. The milk and salt mixture takes the "gamy" flavor out of the freshwater clams, and other wild meats.
3. Cover the bowl and refrigerate it for 24 hours prior to preparing your freshwater clams. From here, they can be cooked in any manner you see fit, and the flavor is improved.
