Choose A Ripe Honeydew Melon

Choose a Ripe Honeydew Melon

Honeydew melons are a variety of muskmelon that is commonly grown in California, Arizona, Texas and Mexico. These melons have a very sweet, bright green flesh and can be refrigerated for up to five days after they ripen. They are often fragrant even before they are cut. It is important to select a honeydew melon that is mature, but not overly ripe. Immature melons will lack sweetness while overly ripe melons have an unpleasant, mushy consistency. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check the appearance of the melon. A ripe honeydew melon will have a yellow or cream appearance and occasionally have bright yellow patches. Immature melons are more beige in appearance.

2. Feel the melon's skin. The skin of a honeydew contains delicate veining that you can feel clearly when the melon ripens. You may also be able to see the veining at the base of the melon. A ripe honeydew melon's skin will also be firm and waxy.

3. Check the stem, if you are picking your honeydew melons straight from the vine. The stem of a ripe honeydew will be soft and springy when you squeeze it.

4. Thump the melon. A ripe honeydew melon will give off a hollow sound when thumped.
