Hula is a traditional Hawaiian dance to honor the goddess Laka. It is entertaining, fun and a great way to exercise. You can learn some simple hula steps on the internet.
Instructions
Learn to Hula
1. Try to learn all steps to the beat of traditional Hawaiian music. Your hands should move like ocean waves. Start with your arm extended to the right of your body, elbow slightly bent and left hand on your hip with fingers pointing down. On the first beat, raise your right wrist and dip your right hand downward. Then lower your wrist as your hand moves upward. On the second beat, bring your right forearm and hand halfway towards your chest and repeat the hand and wrist movements. On the third beat, move your arm closer to your chest and repeat the hand and wrist movement. On the forth beat, you are switching hands. Put your right hand on your hip and repeat the raises and dips with your left hand.
2. You should be barefoot once you start working on foot movement. Stand with your feet about four inches apart. Bend the knees slightly. Your body weight should be on the balls of your feet. On the first beat, take a small step to the right. On the second beat, bring your left foot beside your right. On the third count, step again with your right. On the fourth beat, bring your left foot back towards your right, and then you will take these steps to the left.
3. Your hips should sway gently. The first beat is to the right, the second to the left, the third to the right, and the fourth to the left.
4. Now you are ready to put the first three steps together. Keep all motion continuous and smooth, like the ocean. This takes a lot of practice, especially before you will want to perform in front of anyone.
5. After you have mastered these simple steps, you may want to continue your study of hula. A few areas have local instructors, but you may wish to order DVDs to learn hula. Make sure to start with basic level instruction that goes through movements slowly before trying to learn from a video that only shows the dance at normal speed.
