Flowers add a personal touch to cake decorations.
Cake decorating can be fun and exciting, but you must be cautious with the decorations you decide to use. Your cake's decorations should be reflective of the occasion at which the cake will be displayed. For a children's party, be sure the decorations are all edible and nothing is too small to choke on. For an adult, make sure the cake displays the taste of the person it's intended to celebrate. Using real flowers to decorate a cake can be a beautiful way to approach your project, but be sure you follow a few steps beforehand to make sure the flowers are just right. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Bake and frost your cake. Before you start decorating a cake with flowers or other objects, allow your frosted cake to set for about an hour. This will help ensure your decorations don't sink into the frosting.
2. Research the flowers you want to decorate your cake with. Some flowers are not meant for human consumption because they are toxic, such as calla lilies and poinsettias. Tulips and roses, however, are safe.
3. Choose the flowers you want on your cake, and wash them gently and thoroughly with warm water. Even if you bought them from a florist who says there are no pesticides or other poisons on the blooms, it is best not to chance it.
4. Arrange the flowers on your cake. If your cake has only a single tier, arrange a small bouquet on the top. If it has more than one tier, arrange the flowers around each side. Create a waterfall effect down one side, with flowers arranged directly below the flower from the tier above, or arrange petals or blooms around the entirety of each tier, with a bouquet on the top.
