Many restaurants on the island of Oahu serve up inexpensive meals.
Hawaii is notoriously expensive. But inexpensive restaurants do exist, especially in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. Among the inexpensive restaurants are Asian cuisines, including Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai, as well as mainland fare like burgers and tacos. In the cities, there are grocery stores, bakeries and coffee shops with inexpensive food items and food stands with everything from hot dogs to fruit.
Instructions
1. Search locally focused websites such as Cheap Places to Eat on Oahu, which features Kua'Aina with grilled foods and salads, and Killer Tacos. Trip Advisor includes everything from bakeries to hot dog stands. Yelp Oahu's Cheap Dinner listings have about a thousand offerings. (see Resources)
2. Find a noodle or fruit stand for a quick meal. Noodle and fruit stands provide quick nutrition and energy while you're on the go. You also can shop for snacks in grocery stores. If you can reduce the number of restaurant meals you eat by snacking throughout the day, you should greatly reduce the amount of money you spend.
3. Bring along a list of options for inexpensive restaurants in the areas you plan to explore. If you wind up starving after a day of hiking volcanoes or surfing, you'll be less likely to want to bargain shop and more tempted to eat wherever you are, regardless of the cost.
4. Eat at the hotel if breakfast is free. This will fill you up and reduce consumption elsewhere. If there's an expensive restaurant you really want to try, eat lunch there instead of dinner. Many of the same food items usually are offered, but in somewhat smaller portions at a lower cost.
