Make A Christmas Yard Sign

Use paint to make a stunning holiday yard sign.

A Christmas yard sign can add cheer to your yard during the holidays. Making your own sign allows you to put your money aside to buy gifts. The project can typically be done using items found around the house. With a bit of creativity and a few craft supplies, you can have a one-of-a-kind Christmas yard sign.

Instructions

1. Look around your garage or visit a hardware store to find a wooden board that you feel is large enough for your sign. Stick to large boards that are about as thick as a cabinet door so that the sign is both easy to see from the road and sturdy.

2. Prepare the board. Sand the wood until it is smooth, if necessary. Apply an outdoor primer to the board. Allow the primer to dry for several hours.

3. Paint the sign with an exterior latex paint that can be easily seen in the snow or grass, depending on the weather where you live. Allow this basecoat to dry for several hours.

4. Paint a message on the sign that spreads good tidings to your neighbors and passers-by. Options include: "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", "Happy Holidays", "Santa's Landing Zone" and "Season's Greetings". Paint the message in a color that contrasts with the base coat. For example, if you have a red sign use green or black letters. Use stencils to paint the words or paint them free-hand. A yardstick can help you keep the message as straight as possible. Allow the paint to dry for several hours.

5. Use stencils, or your own free-hand design, and acrylic paint to create a border around the message. Popular choices include candy canes, bells, holly, stars and Christmas trees.

6. Attach two sturdy wooden stakes to the bottom of the board with screws or nails. Paint the stakes with the base coat. Allow the paint to dry for several hours.

7. Apply an outdoor sealant to the sign to preserve your design. Allow the sealant to dry according to manufacturer's instructions.

8. Secure your sign to the ground by pressing the stakes into place in your yard.

9. Draw attention to your sign by placing a strand of Christmas lights around it.
