Make A Tissue Paper Wreath

Tissue paper and paper plates can be made into a wonderful Christmas wreath that is easy enough for a child to make. These delightful wreaths bring a bit of Christmas cheer to any corner of the home or make terrific gifts for family and friends. This craft is suitable for either an at-home project or a class activity during the holidays. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Purchase inexpensive paper plates. Each child will need one plate. Cut the center out of the paper plate with a pair of scissors to form the basic shape of the wreath.

2. Provide each child with craft glue. You can pour a small amount of glue in a small paper cup and provide the child with a popsicle stick for spreading the glue. Demonstrate the procedure of spreading a thin layer of glue on the paper plate. The entire plate will need to be covered, but it is better to work in small 2 to 4 inch sections.

3. Provide two different shades of green tissue paper and a few pieces of red tissue paper for children to work with. For young children you may want to draw circles on the plate to represent the berries and have children fill the circles with the red tissue. This will assist the child in proper placement and knowing how much red to use. You can purchase precut tissue paper at your local craft or school supply store.

4. Pinch the end of the precut square of tissue paper so that all four corners point upward. This should be a loose fluff of tissue resembling a flower. Glue the pinched end to the paper plate. Children can hold these in place for a moment with their fingers or provide a skewer or other utensil to push and hold the tissue to the paper plate. Add more tissue squares by pinching and then gluing closely around the plate. Randomly placing different shades of green will add dimension and texture to the finished project. Add red tissue at intervals as berries. Monitor children to see that they are gluing the tissue squares closely to create a nice full wreath.

5. Allow the wreaths to dry overnight in an area where they will not be disturbed. Attach a ribbon or cord for hanging to the back of the wreath. Add a bow to the top of the wreath, if desired. Display on a bulletin board or on the classroom walls during the holidays or send home for a special gift to parents.
