Decorate A Home With Beach Theme

Perhaps you just recently visited the ocean and now feel inspired to recreate the open, airy vibe of the beach into your decor. Or maybe you just visited a friend's home that featured a look that made you imagine cool ocean breezes and soft sand between your toes. Regardless of the reason, choosing to decorate your home with a beach theme is a casual, yet stylish option. And you can also incorporate a lot of do-it-yourself ideas to make the beach theme truly take shape. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Begin by choosing colors that remind you of cool ocean waters, tropical breezes and miles of sand. Beach-inspired colors include soft-toned blues, sandy tans, earth tones and pure white, all of which you can feature on the walls of your home. For example, if you choose a straw-colored tan as your kitchen paint color, accent the word work or trim with an ocean-inspired blue. Another way to create a beach look is to paint your entire house pure white. This immediately gives your home a clean, cottage feel, as if the minute you opened your door, you would be seaside.

2. Add pure white beadboard siding to some or part of your walls. This gives your walls a cottage feel that appears reminiscent of seaside get-togethers. Use narrow beadboard siding for a more formal look and wider beadboard siding to achieve a casual feel. Just ask your local home center for instructions on install the beadboard siding that you select.

3. Select furniture that compliments a beach theme and reminds you of seaside cottages, lakeside homes or tropical verandas. Using furniture made from pale gray driftwood or wood that appears to be worn by water gives your home a rustic beach look. Many seaside furniture stores or specialty stores offer these types of pieces. Also choose end tables, benches and hutches that are painted pure white to achieve more of a beachside cottage feel. Keep chairs, sofas and bedding clean and comfortable, without fuss or frills. Adding smooth white or pale blue slipcovers to sofas and chairs can really make a seaside statement. And do not forget the wicker. Use a blended mix of white wicker tables, chairs and settees within your home and on porches.

4. Make some seaside accessories that are inspired by nature. On your next ocean stroll, gather an array of seashells. Use hot glue to secure the backs of the shells onto store-bought wood-trimmed picture frames or mirrors. This do-it-yourself project will give your beach-inspired home a personal touch. If you do not live near a beach, you can also purchase seashells from your local craft store.

5. Add a mix of tropical plants throughout your home. Place large ficus or palm trees in the corners of larger rooms. Put lush flowers, such as African violets, Birds of Paradise and orchids, on tables to serve as centerpieces. The overall goal of your greenery is to remind you of tropical foliage surrounding a beach.
