Mermaid costumes can be fun and sexy at the same time.
A mythological creature, a mermaid has the head and torso of a female and a scaly tail like a fish. For Halloween or an under-the-sea-themed party, a mermaid costume is a unique idea. Not only is it sparkly, shiny and eye-catching, but the costume is very easy to make and put together.
Instructions
1. Cover a flat, dry work surface with newspaper. Lay the mermaid skirt on the work surface.
2. Spray the skirt with fabric spray. Choose one color to start and use sweeping motions to cover the front of the skirt. Allow the front to dry before moving on to the back. Flip the skirt over and use the same motion to cover the back. Allow the back to dry.
3. Paint the skirt on the front a second time with the next color of fabric spray, being sure not to completely cover the first layer of paint. Allow the front to dry, then do the same to the back. This will create a blend effect. Allow the paint to dry completely (you may paint the halter top using the same method if you wish).
4. Cut at least 100 pieces of shiny fabric to create 2-inch by 2-inch "scales." Use fabric glue to glue the scales in rows on the skirt. Allow the fabric glue to dry.
5. Glue a large sea shell to the center of the shirt (center of the breasts) using heavy-duty glue. Allow the glue to dry.
6. Set the tiara on the work surface. Use heavy-duty glue to attach dozens of tiny seashells on the tiara. This creates an under-the-sea look to the "crown."
7. Slip on the skirt and halter top. Put on a shell necklace and shell earrings.
8. Place a wig on your head. If you're not using a wig, wash your hair the night before you'll be wearing the costume and braid it in two pigtails while it's wet. The next day, un-braid your hair and use a light-weight mousse to "scrunch" it. This will create "beach waves" when it air dries.
9. Finish the look with the seashell tiara.
