Dress Like A Vintage Cigarette Girl

Cigarette Girl by Tribute Productions

Look as though you stepped out of a vintage magazine by perfecting a cigarette girl look. Cigarette girls were attractive women who sold individual packs of cigarettes in clubs and restaurants in the 1920s through the 1950s. The cigarettes were displayed on wide trays they carried with the help of a wide strap around the neck. Cigarette girls generally wore short skirts with halter tops, though short jackets were also worn. Create a cigarette girl costume for a themed party, theatrical or video production, or as a Halloween costume.

Instructions

1. Paint a low, wide cardboard box black, such as the type computer paper or canned goods come in. Use white or colored paints to create designs, if desired. Punch holes in the side with a screwdriver or hole punch for stringing a wide ribbon through to go around your neck. You can also use a tray you already own.

2. Browse thrift, vintage and consignment stores for satin halter tops with matching skirts from the 1940s and '50s. Separate skirt and top pieces are also acceptable. Look for short, poofy skirts that feature lots of tulle.

3. Style your hair in vintage curls and waves or wear a wig. Use matte foundation to even out the skin tone and paint the lips a matte red. Use powder blush on your cheeks and brush the eyelashes with black mascara. Line the eyes with black liquid liner.

4. Put on a pair of fishnet stockings once you have dressed in your costume. Wear black high heels or other colored heels that match your outfit. Wear a vintage hat, such as a small top hat adorned with feathers or small pill box hats with straps under the chin.
