Hawaiian Theme Bedroom Ideas

Let all the things you love about Hawaii inspire your decor.

A Hawaiian-themed bedroom can make you feel like you have your own private island retreat. No matter where you live, what the weather is like or how drab your day was, coming home to your Hawaiian bedroom can help you relax and lift your spirits. The beautiful Hawaiian Islands offer plenty of inspiration for your decorating theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Wall Mural

To really transport yourself to a tropical Hawaiian island, consider getting a wall mural painted on a focal wall. Choose a mural that depicts a Hawaiian scene, like a rain forest, a sunset over the ocean, or a landscape with dormant volcanoes looming in the background under a bright blue, cloudless sky. If you are handy with a brush, you can paint your own wall mural. If you feel your artistic skills are not up to par, hire someone to paint it for you. Alternatively, look for nature-scene wallpaper or peel-and-stick wall decorations, or hang a large tapestry on the wall.

Floral Prints

Look for floral prints to add splashes of color and the tropical atmosphere to your Hawaiian bedroom. Floral prints can be big and bold, just like the notorious Hawaiian shirts, giving a punch of color and pattern to your bedding, curtains and upholstered furnishings. If you like something a little more subtle, look for simple leaves or floral shapes in softer or neutral colors to bring the same feel to the room without overpowering it. To break up overly showy prints, add some solid colors, such as a couple of black throw pillows on the bed or a tan valance on the window.

Luau Props

For a fun and whimsical style, raid your local party store for luau accessories and incorporate them into the room. This is particularly fitting for a teen's or child's room, to keep it youthful and light. Drape leis on the bedposts or the edge of a mirror, or trim the edges of lamps with them. Cut open grass skirts and use them to make a bed or chair skirt, or use as a curtain valance. Plastic Tiki cups can be a cute shelf display to organize pencils, crayons, paper clips and other home office or art supplies. Strings of luau lanterns make excellent accent lighting.

Potted Plants

A Hawaiian bedroom doesn't look complete without a little bit of greenery. A large potted plant makes an excellent accent for a corner or beside a chair. Whether you prefer rubber or real, choose something with large, palm-like leaves. Big, colorful blooms will also help bring in the tropical style. If big and bold is not your style, a hanging fern by a window or a simple, arching orchid on a dresser can make an elegant addition.

Natural Materials

It's hard to think of Hawaii without thinking of the outdoors: the lush forests, sparkling beaches and rocky mountains are what make this state so alluring and exotic. Incorporate some natural materials in your room decor. Woven grass throw rugs, bamboo blinds, seashell or driftwood accessories fit the bill.
