The bridge to Long Island
As one of the most populated islands in the world, Long Island has no shortage of activities for young or old. Keeping your kids entertained during a trip there is a breeze, as there are many activities geared toward youngsters. From beaches to aquariums and amusement parks, you can fill a week's worth activities for your children.
Instructions
1. Visit the Long Island Children's Museum. Located in Garden City near Roosevelt Field Mall, the museum offers daily early childhood programs, art, music and science-based workshops, among other exhibits. Opened in 2002, the museum features 14 hands-on permanent galleries and indoor and outdoor areas to explore.
2. Go to the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery. The hatchery teaches about New York's freshwater ecosystems, and visitors get get hands-on education in the hatchery's two aquariums. Most of the time, though, is spent outdoors, so dress appropriately.
3. Take the kids to Ocean Beach during the warmer months. The primary modes of transportation there are boat and your feet. Bicycle riding, for instance, is prohibited in the town from Friday night through Sunday to guarantee safety for pedestrians. Other beaches in the area include Jones Beach, Long Beach, Montauk and the Hamptons.
4. Visit White Post Farms. Children can feed and pet various animals, take pony rides, explore the garden or go on rides. Animals include Grevy's zebras from Kenya, aoudads from northern Africa, dromedary camels, fallow deer, kangaroos, nilgai antelopes from India, nubian goats, sheep, Japanese koi, pot-bellied Pigs, alpacas from South America, llamas and giant tortoises.
5. Head to the Atlantis Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead. From indoor exhibits to a ride on the Atlantis Explorer Tour Boat, the aquarium offers numerous educational opportunities for your kids. This aquarium even has several outdoor exhibits that feature monkeys and lizards.
6. Take a safari at Long Island Game Farm. Located in Mannorville, this zoo features many African animals, including tigers, alligators, kinkajous, peacocks and lemurs.
7. Take your kids to Adventure Land. Location on Route 110 in Farmingdale, this amusement park has rides for children of all ages -- from water rides to thrill rides to rides for small children. There also are shops to buy gifts and plenty of places to eat.
8. Take in a show at the Long Island Puppet Theatre. The theater also serves as a museum celebrating the world's oldest form of entertainment.
