Bake a Cake in a 3D Pan
Baking a cake in a 3-D pan gives dimension and character to your dessert. From bunnies to Disney princesses to race cars, 3-D cake pans come in many varieties suitable for almost any special occasion. After baking, the 3-D cake will stand up on its on, holding the shape of the pan mold for an impressive presentation. Because this cake method requires baking in an enclosed mold, special considerations are needed for best results. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Place a sheet of aluminum foil on the oven rack. This catches any overflowing batter from the pans. Preheat the oven according to the boxed cake mix instructions or recipe directions.
2. Mix cake mix and ingredients in a bowl according to the box instructions or recipe. Denser yellow, chocolate and pound cake recipes work best in 3-D pans.
3. Grease both sides of the 3D cake pan with solid shortening and dust with flour. Using any other greasing agent can make the cake difficult to remove. 3-D cake pans typically have indentations and detailed nooks-make sure you coat all areas thoroughly.
4. Fill the front half of the pan to the rim with cake batter. This is always the half without the small vent hole. Take the back half of the pan (the half with the hole) and snap it together with the front half. Tie a piece of cotton string around the pans to prevent the batter from rising too high and pulling the pans apart.
5. Set the 3-D pan on a cookie sheet. Place in the oven. Bake according to the recipe's instructions. When the baking time is almost up, stick a toothpick through the vent hole to check if the cake is done. If the toothpick comes out clean, the cake is done. When the cake is finished baking, remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack.
6. Remove the top half of the pan after cooling for five minutes. Let cool for another five minutes, then replace the top half of the pan. Flip the cake over and remove the bottom half. Let the cake cool for at least four hours.
7. Place a serving tray under the cake. Turn the cake upright by holding the cake side with your hand and raising the pan side up. Gently remove the pan from the cake.
8. Decorate your cake using icing or fondant.
