Decorate For A Pig Picking

A whole cooked hog is a featured item at a pig picking.

A pig-picking event, usually referred to as a "pig pickin'" is a Southern tradition with roots in the pre--Civil War era when the animal was a staple food for people in the region. During the event, a hog is cooked whole and becomes the meal's main course. Hold a pig pickin' for any occasion from a graduation party, neighborhood gathering or even a wedding reception. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decorate for a pig pickin' in the style of a typical Southern barbecue joint --- feature pig decor in everything. Create pig-themed centerpieces to go on the tables, for example a large plastic or ceramic pig sitting on top of a pile of hay can be featured. Hang pictures of pig artwork throughout the area in varying styles. Use pig paper-plates, pig napkins, and cups with a pig print.

2. Hang pink balloons and streamers from the walls, tables and entryway to represent the pink color of pigs. For events like pig pickin' birthday parties or graduation parties, opt for favorite colors of the honoree or school colors instead.

3. Include humorous items for a wedding reception pig pickin' such as a bride and groom pig either on the top of the cake or on top of the smoked pig itself.

4. Create a pig party favor. For example, brand plastic pigs or pictures of pigs with the year of the graduation, the wedding date, or with the age of the birthday honoree.

5. Pass out rubber pig noses or headbands with pig ears on them for children or the young-at-heart to wear during the pickin'.
