Looking up your gun's serial number can make the difference between beating a criminal charge and being thrown into jail or prison. If you are caught with a gun that has recent been stolen or fired in an outstanding crime, you can become at fault and ultimately become a prime suspect in that crime. Instructions
1. Locate the gun's serial number on the slide, on the handle or inside the gun. If you have trouble with locating the serial number, visit your local gun shop and ask the staff to locate your gun's serial number.
2. Look up your gun's year on the Internet. Access the Proof House website (See Resources) and click the link of your gun's manufacturer. For example, if you have a Colt gun, click the "Colt Serial Numbers" link. Scroll through the left hand menu, and then choose your gun's model. Check under the "Serial Number" heading, and then compare the listed numbers to your gun's serial number. Once you have found this, look to the left to find out the year your gun was manufactured.
3. Check your gun to see its manufacturer, and then contact that manufacturer. Ask the representative to look up your gun's serial number to check the history of the gun. The representative will need registration information to assure that you are the registered owner of the gun. Afterward, the manufacture can give you facts, such as the year the gun was made and the make and model of the gun.
4. Bring your gun to your local police office. An on-call officer will take the gun, locate the serial number, and then look up that serial number. The officer can look up the history of the gun and check to see if the gun was used in a crime or was recently stolen.
