Decorate Doll Cakes

Use two different colors of frosting to decorate a doll cake.

Although decorating a doll cake is by far the most time-consuming part of making one, it is definitely time well spent. Doll cakes typically feature a toy doll or doll topper with a long dress skirt made of cake. The doll's entire dress can be decorated in one or several different colors and extra decorations can be added to the bottom edge of the skirt. With a little creativity and some basic tools, you can turn a doll cake into a beautiful princess, ballerina or even your child's favorite movie character. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Prepare the cake for frosting. Allow the cake to cool completely then apply a thin coat of frosting to keep the cake from falling apart when you decorate it. Also known as a crumb coat, it is a watered down version of your frosting that helps create a smooth surface on the cake so that you can easily decorate it (see reference 1). Mix a cup of the frosting with a teaspoon of water. Continue to add water to the frosting until it has a thin consistency. Gently apply the crumb coat with a large spatula or knife. Allow the crumb coat to set by placing the cake in the refrigerator for half an hour.

2. Apply frosting to the skirt. Place doll cake on cake stand. Apply a thick layer of colored frosting to the skirt using a spatula. Start at the top of the skirt and work your way around in even strokes. Slowly turn the cake stand as you apply the frosting. Apply a second layer of frosting. Use your spatula to create vertical lines going around the entire skirt. Make sure to use a color for the skirt that matches the party's theme, the rest of the cake or the color of the top part of the doll's dress.

3. Add decorations. Use a different color of frosting to decorate the skirt. Create a border around the top part of the skirt at the doll's waistline using a small star- or flower-shaped decorating tip. Line the bottom of the skirt to create a ruffle. Draw an upside-down Y from the middle of the skirt using a star-shaped decorating tip. Create a large bow in the back of the skirt using a round decorating tip. Choose from a variety of cake decorations to add to the rest of the skirt, including candy beads, glitter and flowers.
