Instructions

1. Know the child's interests and hobbies before you begin to decorate. Kid's interests change frequently. Figure out what his favorite cartoon characters or colors are.

2. Decide which type of cake to bake. Certain cake designs require different decorating techniques. A square cake pan provides more decorating opportunities. Character cake pans allow for a simple frosting application. Cut cakes into different sizes and shapes in order to create animals and simple objects.

3. Apply an appropriate base frosting color to the cake. Choose a main color for the cake before you begin decorating. Make sure to spread the frosting evenly and that there is a generous layer of frosting in order to prevent any of the cake from showing through the icing.

4. Write your message clearly on the cake with a piping bag and the correct-size nozzle. Normally, kid's cakes include a name or a special message. Choose an icing color that is easy to read, and write the letters large enough to ensure that the message is legible.

5. Accent the cake with additional icing techniques. Create a border on the cake with the icing, design flowers or draw additional designs on the cake. Icing allows for many possibilities when it comes to decorating cakes. Add icing decorations already made by companies to enhance the cake's theme.

6. Decorate the cake with candy pieces. Chocolate-coated candies, sprinkles or peanut butter cups. Utilize powdered sugar and cocoa to decorate the cake with stencils. Place candy in designs and patterns on the cake to add interest.

7. Add toys to the cakes to impress the children. Use toy cars, plastic dolls, building blocks and superhero figures as cake toppers. A toy can help create the theme of the cake and become the highlight of the party. Use game pieces from board games to recreate a child's favorite game.
