Adjust The Sights On A Burgo 22cal Pistol

The Burgo .22-caliber revolver is an inexpensively and poorly made handgun from Germany that was imported into the United States during the 1960s and banned by the Gun Control Act of 1968. It shoots 6 rounds of .22 LR ammunition. The front and rear sights are fixed, meaning that any adjustment to them requires a permanent alteration of the metal.

Instructions

1. Settle on the ammunition to be used in the gun. Many types of .22 ammunition will shoot to different spots on the target, and adjusting it for one type and then using another will cause your aim to be off.

2. Mount the gun in a rest where it is held steady and adjust the sights so that it is exactly on a target at 20 feet. Shoot at least 18 rounds while keeping the gun on target to see if a pattern develops on the paper. If the gun shoots consistently high, low or to one side, then the sights can be modified. If the gun is shooting seemingly at random, then the barrel is flawed and a sight adjustment will not help.

3. File the front sight down if the gun is shooting low. A minor change can have significant effects on the aim, so the goal is to remove just a little metal and then retest the point of aim. Keep the file as flat as possible and use smooth, even, long strokes. Run an Arkansas stone over the top of the front sight after filing. If the gun is still shooting low, then continue to remove just a small bit of metal and retest until it shoots correctly.

4. File the rear sight down if the gun is shooting high. Follow the same techniques as filing the front sight.

5. File the opposite side of the front sight if the gun is shooting to one side or another. For example, if it is shooting to the left, remove some metal on the right. Again, go very slowly and use the same techniques as in adjusting the front sight downward.

6. Touch up the bare metal afterward with a commercial cold blue kit to protect the gun from rust. Rub the bluing chemical on the metal and wipe it off after the instructed time.
