Hawaiian Tropical Flower Arrangements

Hibiscus flowers have a prominent stamen.

The Hawaiian Islands are a tropical paradise known for their lush and colorful plants, especially flowers. Hawaiian flowers come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors, making them available to use in any type of arrangement. From a modern ohia arrangement to a romantic hibiscus bouquet, the tropical flowers provide an attractive decoration in any home.

Modern Ohia Arrangement

A sleek vase, decorative stones, floral foam and blossom-covered ohia branches are all you need to create a sharp modern arrangement with a colorful Hawaiian flare. Ohia blossoms, known as pua lehua, are delicate, round, feathery flowers with thin red "hairs" poking out from a central bulb.

A short bowl-shaped vase in black or silver provides a simple yet crisp base for the decoration. A piece of floral foam in the bowl provides a way to secure the flowers in place. Three to five branches of red ohia blossoms add a shock of color and angular lines rising out of the vase. Black decorative stones fill the remaining vase space to weigh down and cover the foam.

Romantic Hibiscus Bouquet

The yellow hibiscus may be Hawaii's official state flower, but the blossoms come in more than just yellow. The large flowers, known as pua aloalo, contain delicate round petals and one thick stamen prominently sticking out from the middle. Delicate stems and jagged leaves of hibiscus flowers look best in a bunch or mixed with sturdier materials.

A medium-height, fluted glass vase in white or gold provides an elegant base for the arrangement. A round bouquet of dark red and hot pink hibiscuses mixed with thin ferns forms a vibrant addition to the top of the vase. Pale pink hibiscus flowers sitting slightly taller than the rest of the bouquet soften the silhouette and add depth to the arrangement.

Cheerful Mixed Bouquet

A mixture of colorful orchids, hibiscuses and lokelani roses forms a cheerful decoration for a dining or coffee table. Delicate orchids are not native to Hawaii, but they have flourished since introduced to the islands and are often mixed with the native flowers. Lokelani roses are the official flower of the Hawaiian island of Maui, but they were introduced to the islands in the 1800s and are not native flora.

A cylindrical vase covered with wicker basket weaving provides an earthy base for the tropical flower arrangement. A flared bouquet with small yellow hibiscuses around the bottom, pink lokelani roses around the middle and small white orchids on twisting branches sticking from the top adds a burst of joyful color to the creation. Long strands of wild grass provide filler for the arrangement and give the bouquet a lush, overgrown accent.
