Hawaiian Wedding Reception Ideas

Frangipani is a tropical plant that can add color to Hawaiian decor.

Hawaiian wedding receptions are about having fun and keeping things casual. The decor is colorful and exotic. The entertainment is lively with lots of music and dancing. The food is prepared with pineapples, coconuts and other tropical fruits. Roasted Kalua pig is the main dish in a Hawaiian luau wedding reception.

Decorations

Use green or tan raffia grass table skirts to cover the tables. Decorate the table with scattered orchids, hibiscus, seashells and palm fronds. Make a centerpiece using fresh pineapple rings or bowls of fruits and flowers. If the reception takes place outside, line the reception area with tiki torches.

Entertainment

Have lei greeters meet the wedding guests with leis. Hire hula dancers and/or fire dancers and a Hawaiian band for entertainment.

Food and Beverage

Serve traditional Hawaiian food such as sweet chicken, salmon, fresh tuna, poi (sticky taro-root food paste), pineapple and roasted pig. Serve a guava cream or coconut cream wedding cake. Serve Blue Hawaiians, mai tais and pina coladas for alcoholic beverages and strawberry punch and pineapple iced tea for nonalcoholic beverages.

Traditions

Have guests wear flowers---a flower behind your left ear means you are taken and a flower behind your right ear means you single. "Ke Kali Nei Au" is a Hawaiian wedding song that is often played at weddings.
