Decorate A Pirate Cake

Fashion your pirate cake after a female by removing the stubble for a girl's party.

Whether you are throwing a pirate-themed costume party for adults or a scavenger hunt party for young pirates, you will need to feed your guests. What better way to treat your swashbucklers than with a cake shaped like a pirate. For a fun twist, stick a small gold coin somewhere in the baked cake round for some lucky pirate to find and add to their booty. Surprise adult guests by soaking the cake round with rum before icing the pirate's face. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Place the cake round in the freezer for up to 3 hours. Take a sharp knife and make a cut that looks like a stretched "S" curve as you remove a piece of cake that is approximately 2 inches wide at the widest point; set aside for part of the bandanna. Turn the cake so the cut end is at the top and make another cut down the left side to create an long, football shape. The point at the bottom of this cut is the pirate's chin. The two pieces you cut off will form the bandanna; set them aside for now.

2. Tint 2 1/2 cups of white icing with 1 tbsp. of chocolate icing and spread over the top and sides of the largest piece of cake, which is the pirate's face. Place the halved marshmallow flat-side down on the center of the face and cover with the tinted icing for the pirate's nose. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of cookie crumbs over the chin for the pirate's beard.

3. Cut an almond-shape out of the fruit leather and place in the position of the left eye. Add a small amount of white icing to one side of a round yellow candy and place in the center of the fruit leather for the eyeball. Place the chocolate-covered cookie on the opposite side of the nose for an eye patch over the right eye. Use two strings of black licorice to create a strap extending from the left and right sides of eye patch to the edge of the face, cutting to fit.

4. Make an oval shape with a piece of red licorice and put on the face for the lips. Cover one of the oval breath mints with the gold foil. Place the gold covered mint and the remaining four mints inside the lips for the pirate's teeth. Cut two 2-inch strips of black licorice and place this across the top of the eye and eye patch for the pirate's eyebrows.

5. Arrange the two cut pieces of cake at the top of the pirate's head so that one piece is horizontal to the top side with its rounded edge facing up. Place the other piece on top of this with their rounded edges touching. Spread 1 1/2 cups of red icing over the tops and sides of the two cut pieces that are the bandanna. Add the 19 remaining yellow round candies to the bandanna in an equally-spaced pattern.
