Palm trees bring to mind cool sand, warm sun and a gentle breeze. Redecorate your living room using a palm tree theme to create a relaxing environment. Instead of paying a fortune to a professional to design a palm-tree-themed living room, do it yourself using items found at the local home improvement or craft store. Instructions
1. Paint the walls a light tan or taupe color. Choose a shade that you like that gives the room a sandy feel. Apply one coat of paint and let it dry overnight. If necessary, apply a second coat for full coverage.
2. Draw the shape of a palm tree on one wall using chalk. Choose an area that will not be blocked by large furniture, such as a bookshelf or entertainment center. Once the shape is drawn, paint the palm tree shape with acrylic paints. Use browns for the trunk and greens for the fronds. Start with the base color. Let the paint dry for three to five hours and then paint on any details, such as highlights or shadows.
3. Wipe the surface of the painted palm tree with a damp sponge. The sponge removes any chalk that remains from your initial drawing.
4. Cover your existing couch and chairs with brown or green slipcovers. Choose covers that complement the colors you painted the palm tree. Use one-size-fits-all slipcovers or purchase custom-made covers.
5. Place throw pillows on the couch and chairs. Use pillows in greens, browns or tans. Alternatively, look for embroidered pillows with palm trees on them.
6. Hang curtains. Look for store-bought curtains at home improvement stores with palm trees on them. If you cannot find palm tree curtains, make your own using fabric from the fabric store. Or, utilize a table cloth or shower curtain. Use alligator clamp curtain clips to attach the tablecloth or shower curtain to the rod.
7. Place pictures of palm trees and beach scenes in picture frames. Hang the frames on the wall or set them on bookshelves.
