Hawaiian Salt Water Fish Identification

The Yellow Tang Fish is found in the warm waters of Hawaii.

You can identify Hawaii's unique salt water fish by its color, size and shape. They thrive in the warm waters surrounding these lush islands, and a wide variety of them make wonderful additions to aquariums.

Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loricula)

The Flame Angelfish is bright orange or red with black stripes running vertically down the middle of its body. It also has fringes of blue above and below its orange tail. It only grows to about 4 inches in length and lives between 5 to 7 years. The Flame Angelfish originates from the western, central and southern regions of the Pacific Ocean.

Longnose Hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus)

The Longnose Hawkfish is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific, including the Hawaiian Islands. The Longnose Hawkfish is white with red or orange crisscross markings resembling a checkerboard. It also has a long nose and concave tail.

Yellow Tang (Zebramsoma flavescens)

The Yellow Tang is primarily endemic to Hawaiian waters, though it may range slightly farther out into the Pacific. It has a bright yellow, disc-shaped body with an extended nose used to search for food.

Big Eyed Squirrel Fish (Myripristis species)

The Big Eyed Squirrel fish or Blotcheye Soldierfish is found in the tropical waters of Hawaii. They can grow up to 9 inches long and have large eyes, an orange body and a down-turned mouth.

Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish (Forcipiger flavissiumus)

The Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish also originates from the Indo-Pacific. The top part of its head is black; and the lower half below its long, tweezer-shaped nose is white. The rest of the body is yellow with a single black spot on the back fin.
