Highlighter Party Themes

Use the bright colors of highlighters in your party decorations.

Highlighter parties feature bright colors and glow-in-the-dark party decorations; this type of celebration is ideal for teens celebrating a birthday or graduation. If you're organizing a highlighter party for a friend or loved one, coming up with eye-catching decorations and interactive activities will make the occasion one to remember. Does this Spark an idea?

Highlighter Party Decorations

Purchase four or five blacklights for the party to properly accent all the decorations when you turn the lights out. Use white sheets or canvases for the highlighter party--when you shine the blacklight on these surfaces, the words or images you've created on the canvas well show up well. Use highlighters to write words like 'Happy Birthday', 'Happy Sweet Sixteen' or 'Congratulations' on the white sheets or canvases, along with the name of the guest of honor. Include images in your artwork as well, like pictures of the birthday girl's favorite things, like shoes or handbags, or the emblem of the birthday boy's favorite sports team. For table centerpieces, clean out plastic soda bottles and place the inside of a highlighter in the bottle. Fill the bottle with water and allow it to sit for a few days. Once the color has saturated the water, the mixture will glow under the blacklight. Purchase streamers plates, napkins, and cups in highlighter colors as well--colors like neon orange and green show up especially well under a blacklight.

Activities for the Highlighter Party

Purchase glow beads so that party-goers can make their own glow-in-the-dark jewelry during the celebration. Or, rent glow-in-the-dark equipment like beach balls and glow-in-the-dark volleyball nets so that guests can divide into teams and play a game of volleyball under blacklights. Of course, you'll want to hire a DJ for this event--highlight the DJ area with glowsticks and strobe lights, and provide glowsticks for everyone at the party, so that they can dance with them as their favorite songs are playing. Since you've already bought highlighter-colored items for the guests to eat with, prepare a treat like glow-in-the-dark Jello or green beverages that glow under a blacklight. These will definitely be topics of conversation at the party, regardless of the age of the guests.

Highlighter Party Favors

Ask each guest to bring a plain white t-shirt, so that they can decorate it at the party with highlighters or paint that glows in the dark. Buy a few white t-shirts to have on hand in case someone forgets theirs. Purchase neon fedoras to hand out to guests at the end of the party--have the name of the birthday boy or girl, as well as the date of the party, printed on the side of the hat in black. Pick up large glowsticks, as well as glow-in-the-dark bracelets and necklaces, at your local party supply store, and give these to guests to remember the party by. A goody bag filled with these items, as well as small trinkets like shoelaces or key chains, will make a great highlighter party favor as well.
