Hobo Costume Ideas

Hobo Costume Ideas

Dressing like a hobo is a great idea when you need a costume--you probably have most of the items that you will need for the costume in your home. If not, you can easily--and cheaply--purchase items at your local thrift shop. With some great ideas for a hobo costume, you will be looking like a hobo in no time.

Clothing

Clothing should be old and well-worn. Look for a flannel shirt and an old pair of jeans. Use clothes that either are a little too big or a little too small. This makes for a better hobo costume because it looks as though the clothes are hand-me-downs. If you have time, use additional fabric to sew patches on the shirt and pants, even if they don't really need them.

Shoes

Look for your oldest pair of sneakers--the ones you never wear anymore but haven't thrown out. Other hobo costume ideas for shoes include work boots, mismatched shoes and wearing no shoes at all.

Props

The classic prop for a hobo costume is a large stick with a bandanna on the end--this is where you will carry all your worldly possessions. A more modern idea would be to carry a sign asking for money--try to write something funny on your sign. Remember that you will have to carry your props with you throughout the night, so make a sign that is easy to carry.

Dirt

A hobo costume should be dirty. You can even use the real stuff. A few days before you plan to wear the costume, take your clothes outside and rub them around in the mud. Bring them back inside and let them dry. Before you put the hobo clothes on, take them back outside for a good shake to get some of the dirt off. You want your clothes to be dirty, but not caked with dirt.

Makeup

Consider wearing makeup as part of your hobo costume. Clown makeup will work well. Make your chin dark to represent a five o'clock shadow.
