Decorate A Hexagonshaped Wedding Cake

A hexagon-shaped cake gives architectural interest.

For a different look to your wedding cake, choose a non-traditional shape, such as hexagon. The six-sided shape is a cross between round and square cakes, with the straight sides of a square and the circular structure of a round. These qualities lend a graphic feel to your cake, which benefits from modern and minimalist decorations. As with any wedding cake, place the cake on a spinning decorators' pedestal to be able to easily and evenly access each side of the cake. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Split and fill each layer of cake with your desired filling. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and store in the fridge until you are ready to decorate.

2. Tint your buttercream with gel, paste or powder food coloring, if desired. A white cake makes an elegant, modern statement. If you wish you can dye the frosting to match the wedding colors.

3. Spread a thin layer of buttercream frosting over the tops and sides of each layer. This is called the crumb layer, and helps contain crumbs that could mar the smooth finish of the outer layer of buttercream.

4. Cut four strips 4 inch by the width of your roll of parchment paper. Place the strips on your pedestal, creating the outline of a square around the perimeter of the pedestal.

5. Place the bottom cake layer on the pedestal. Frost the top and sides with a 1/4-inch layer of buttercream. Decorate the layer as desired. Consider a basketweave, tiny dots in a contrasting color, or scrollwork, applied with a small, round-tipped pastry tip. Purchase or print a scroll work template to assist with application. Press the template gently against each side of the cake, apply the frosting, then remove and work on the next side of the cake, until all six are completed.

6. Pull away the parchment paper, then remove the cake layer to your serving platter or cardboard transport base. Repeat Step 4 and Step 5 with the remaining layers of cake, placing each tier on its own tier base.

7. Transport the cake to the wedding site and assemble the stacked tiers according to the directions on your assembly kit.

8. Add the final decorating touches. Run a 2-inch wide ribbon around the base of the cake, or pipe a decorative border around the bottom of each layer. For a floral cake, cascade fresh or gum paste flowers down one side of the cake in a waterfall formation. Add a flower bouquet cake topper to the top tier.
