Decorate A Cape Cod Seaside Living Room

Use seashell in your living room decor.

Make your Cape Cod feel like a waterfront resort by decorating it with elements of the sand and sea. You don't need to travel far to get the relaxed feeling of an oceanfront property in your living room. A seaside theme makes extensive use of cool-temperature colors, weathered-looking furniture and an uncluttered room. This style works well for small houses, including bungalows and Cape Cods, where space is tight. Figure out what elements fit for your living room to make it feel like a vacation every time you walk in the door. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Establish a color theme. A seaside theme works well with nearly all hues and shades of blue and brown. Stark white, ivory and bright yellow hues contrast with the darker, cooler shades. Choose two or three colors to focus your living room on.

2. Integrate patterns into your living room. Pick one or two patterns, such as a bold stripe, large geometric design or sea life depiction, to bring out the essence of your theme. Find patterns that have contrasting colors in your color scheme.

3. Pick simple furniture. Many Cape Cods have small, closed-off rooms, which make decorating with furniture difficult. Choose pieces that fit the scale of the room. Place the furniture away from common walkways.

4. Pick tables and chairs with distressed paint or natural stain. This furniture makes a room look soft and weathered, lending a comfortable environment to hang out in. Wicker furniture and antique pieces provide the weathered look. Find furniture that is easy to clean and maintain.

5. Use fabrics that have a weathered feel, such as linen, canvas, denim and cotton. Incorporate these fabrics in drapery, accessories and furniture.

6. Add accessories that represent the sea. A vase filled with tumbled glass, sand or shell fragments contributes to the water-themed look. Other items such as dried starfish, driftwood and coral give the seaside theme a natural feel. Stuffed and mounted fish, pieces of sailboat rigging and artwork depicting ocean or waterfront scenes also brings the theme together.
