Decorate Tables With Grass Centerpieces

Use wheat grass to decorate a table.

Wheat grass is grown for its healthy properties, but it has other uses too. Use the grass to make unique centerpieces for special events or during the holiday season. The wheat grass looks like lawn when growing, making it an ideal background for many displays. The bright, healthy green also perks up the dinner table and is likely to be a conversation starter. Plan your centerpiece in advance so you have time to grow the wheat grass.

Instructions

Holiday Centerpiece

1. Grow wheat grass in a long, shallow tray, such as one that is at least 1 foot wide and 2 feet long. Use a neutral tray that's black, brown or green -- so it won't stand out from the decor.

2. Trim the grass so it's uniform in appearance and looks like a well-maintained lawn. Use scissors to cut the grass. Leave it about 1 inch high.

3. Set holiday items on top of the grass so it looks like a miniature yard display. For example, set a Santa Claus, reindeer and sleigh on the grass for a Christmas centerpiece. You can frost the grass with synthetic snow or canned whipped cream to replicate snow. For Easter, place Easter eggs, chocolate bunnies and spring flowers in the grass.

4. Put the centerpiece in the middle of the table and use neutral colors, such as a cream table runner, as a backdrop for the display.

Wedding Centerpieces

5. Grow wheat grass for a decorative table. You may need several containers if you place a centerpiece on each reception table. Choose solid glass bowls or try a lined basket or metal bucket.

6. Trim the grass so it is uniform in height but still quite long -- 2 to 3 inches. Use sharp scissors to trim the grass.

7. Mix water with floral preservative according to the package instructions and fill flower tubes with the solution.

8. Hold flowers up to the container to gauge how long you want them and how much they will stick out of the grass. Cut the flowers to the desired height with a sharp, smooth knife and insert them in the flower tubes.

9. Add the flowers to the centerpiece by pressing them into the grass.

10. Embellish the display with items like ribbon around the edge of the container, butterflies or dragonflies on wire sticking out of the grass -- and something that represents the bride and groom, such as cards with their names on them.

11. Arrange the centerpieces on the table by centering them in the middle -- or if you used longer trays, you can line them along the edge. This works well on the long bridal party table.
