Build An Oilcan Ukulele

Build an Oil-Can Ukulele

A ukulele is a fun instrument to play. It is portable and often draws comments from your audience. With a long tradition of homemade instruments in the folk music world, many musicians have enjoyed making their own ukuleles. Using readily available materials and a few common tools, you too can make your own oil-can ukulele.

Instructions

1. Wash the oil can out with a strong detergent/water solution. Rinse it with water and dry the inside of the oil can with the paper towels.

2. Drill 12 small holes in the front of the oil can. This will allow the sound to come out of your ukulele. Drill four more small holes in the bottom of the oil can. This is where you will attach the guitar (ukulele) strings.

3. Trace around the end of the one by two on the top end of the oil can. Cut this rectangle out of the top using your box cutter or tin snips.

4. Sand the neck of the ukulele smooth. Then insert it into the end of the oil can and screw it carefully to the oil can. Drill four small holes in the top of the ukulele's neck and fit the tuning pegs into these holes.

5. Thread the guitar strings up through the small holes in the bottom of the oil can, across the front of the can and along the neck of the ukulele. Wrap the strings around the tuning pegs and tighten or loosen the pegs to tune the ukulele.

6. Decorate your new oil-can ukulele with whatever color paint you like and enjoy your new instrument.
