Instructions

1. Place a standard-size sheet of construction paper in your desired color on a worktable. Stencil attractive designs on it or decorate it free-style with patterns of your choice. Color within the lines using paints or markers and allow the sheet to dry.

2. Fold the sheet in two so the longer sides are together. Align the corners before pressing the fold.

3. Measure 1 1/2 to 2 inches along the upper edge of the folded paper and mark the spot with a pencil. Extend the mark with a ruler to form a horizontal line along the edge. Also extend the corners of the mark to form two parallel lines along the short sides of the sheet. Measure and mark every 1/2 to 1 inch along the folded side within the pencil lines using a ruler and pencil.

4. Slit through the pencil marks along the folded edge with sharp scissors. Avoid extending the slit into the 2-inch perimeter along the edges.

5. Unfold the paper carefully. Apply glue to the end of one short side and join it to the end of the other short side to form a circular lantern.

6. Measure the diameter of the paper lantern and trace it on a sheet of construction paper. Mark four to five 1-inch tabs spaced evenly around the edges. Cut out the circular outline and tabs with sharp scissors.

7. Fold each tab upward, forming the bend flush with the circular outline. Insert the base of the lantern over the circular outline.

8. Glue the tabs and press each against the corresponding side of the lantern to secure it in place.

9. Cut and secure a length of double-sided tape to the base of a battery operated candle. Lower the candle over the center at the base of the lantern. Press it lightly to keep it in place.

10. Cut a 1/2-inch-wide strip of construction sheet in the same color as the paper lantern or a different color to form the handle. Keep it 8 to 10 inches long. Fold a length of double-sided tape at each end of this strip and secure it to the inner edges of the lantern. Join the handle evenly on both sides so the lantern does not tilt.
