How Do You Make Jean Pants Into Jean Skirts

A jean skirt is a versatile piece that can be dressed up for work or down for the park. Though there are a variety of skirts available in stores, you can make your own jean skirt out of a pair of jeans that are too short, ripped on the bottom, or otherwise ready for a jean makeover.

Instructions

1. Put on the jeans and mark your desired skirt length on each leg with a pen. Remove the jeans and lay on a flat surface. Use the measuring tape to double check your marks, measuring up from the hem of each leg to ensure an even cut. Cut the legs at your revised mark and set aside.

2. Turn the jeans inside out and cut out the inner seam. Use the seam ripper to remove the outer seam by sliding one prong between the layers of fabric, catching the seam threads in the sharp piece of the ripper.

3. Keeping skirt inside out, fold along front and rear seams so that your view is of one front and one back pocket. This is similar to the way slacks are folded to get a crease down the front leg. Using your measuring tape as a line guide, cut from each side the J-shaped excess fabric that formed the crotch of the jeans, creating a straight line. Discard the trimmings.

4. Lay the skirt flat, back to front with back pockets facing upward. Rip the remaining rear center seam just up to the yoke. The yoke is the triangle material below the waist band, above the rear pockets. Fold under the raw edges of your center cut and press with an iron. Repeat on front.

5. Take your excess legs and cut apart the seams down each side. With back pockets facing up, place one leg panel over the rear split. Pull the sides of the split over the leg panel. Pin together the leg panel and the skirt splits along the pressed seam.

6. Set your machine to edge stitch and sew the V-shaped panel into place. Set your machine to top stitch and sew 1/4 inch from the edge stitch to replicate denim seams. Back stitch over the yoke to secure. Turn the skirt inside out, and cut away excess fabric from the leg panel.

7. Lay the skirt with front pockets facing up. Cut 1/2 inch next to the center seam. Place leg panel on top of the split, then flip split sides to cover the leg panel. Pin in place.

8. Edge-stitch and top-stitch the panel into place. Back-stitch over the front seam. Turn the skirt inside out, and cut away any excess fabric on the leg panel.

9. For an unhemmed look, add a bar tack stitch to the bottoms of the seams and meeting points of the skirt to secure. If you would like to add a hem, turn skirt inside out and fold 1/4 inch of fabric upward. Press and stitch.
